How the job runs, step by step

Every visit follows the same five steps.
- Call and triage. We take the make, model and fault code, so the truck leaves with the likely part aboard.
- Flow and pressure first. We measure temperature rise across the heater before touching the gas train. A healthy heater lifts water roughly 3 to 6 °C between inlet and outlet at rated flow. A larger rise means restricted flow, and restricted flow is the fault, not the symptom. Manufacturers publish a minimum and a maximum flow for each model, commonly somewhere between 30 and 125 US gallons per minute.
- Combustion and ignition. We read manifold gas pressure with a digital manometer, inspect the burner tray, test the igniter and flame sensor, and confirm the vent is clear. Flame sensors are checked by microamp signal rather than by eye, because a sensor can look clean and still fail to prove flame.
- Heat exchanger inspection. We report scale, cupronickel corrosion and soot tracking beside the water test results. Soot on the burner tray points to combustion; white crust in the headers points to chemistry. The two need opposite repairs.
- Fixed quote, then repair. You get parts and labour before we proceed.

One exception overrides the rule. A cracked or leaking heat exchanger on a gas heater is replaced, not patched, at any age, because water entering the burner tray corrodes the gas train and the failure repeats.

Sizing a heater to a Guelph pool
Heater size is set by pool surface area, not by pool volume. Heat leaves a pool through its surface, so a shallow wide pool loses more than a deep narrow one holding the same water.
The working rule of thumb multiplies surface area in square feet by the temperature rise you want in Fahrenheit degrees, then by twelve, to get BTU per hour. A 16 by 32 foot pool has 512 square feet of surface. Asking for a 20 degree Fahrenheit rise over ambient puts that pool near 123,000 BTU per hour of demand before any allowance for wind exposure or overnight cover.
A pool cover changes the arithmetic more than any equipment choice. Evaporation is the dominant loss on an uncovered pool, and it runs hardest on the cool clear nights that are common in Guelph in late spring and early autumn.
What it costs to run, gas against heat pump
Gas and heat pump heaters solve different problems and their running costs behave differently.
Natural gas in Guelph is distributed by Enbridge Gas and billed by the cubic metre. Electricity is distributed by Alectra Utilities and billed by the kilowatt hour, on time-of-use or tiered pricing. A gas heater converts roughly 83 percent of the energy it burns into pool heat. A heat pump moves four to six times the energy it draws, so its cost per unit of heat is far lower, but it can only move heat that is in the outdoor air.
We size and quote both. We do not recommend a heat pump to anyone who wants the pool warm in the third week of May.
Keeping scale off the heat exchanger
Scale is preventable, and preventing it is cheaper than every repair on the table above.
Four numbers control it. Calcium hardness belongs at 200 to 400 ppm, pH at 7.2 to 7.8, total alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm, and the Langelier Saturation Index between minus 0.3 and plus 0.3. The index is the one that matters, because the other three can each sit inside their band while the combination still deposits calcium.
Guelph fill water starts high on hardness, and hardness is the one number that does not come down on its own. Evaporation removes water and leaves calcium behind, so an uncovered pool topped up through a hot Guelph August concentrates rather than dilutes. The corrective is partial drain and refill, and refill in Guelph reintroduces hard water, so the useful move is to hold pH and alkalinity at the low end of their bands to keep the index in range.
Heaters make this worse locally, not globally. The bulk pool can sit in range while the water film against the hottest tube wall does not, which is why a pool that tests fine can still scale a heat exchanger.
Opening and closing the heater in a Guelph season
The heater is the component a Guelph winter destroys if it is skipped.
Closing means draining the heat exchanger completely. Gas heaters carry drain plugs at the header, and a cupronickel exchanger holding water through a Guelph January will split. A split exchanger discovered at opening is the single most expensive avoidable failure we see, and it is invisible until the heater is fired.
Opening runs the other way. Restore flow first, confirm the filter is clean and the valves are open, then fire the heater and watch it complete a full cycle rather than a light-off. Faults that only appear after ten minutes of run time are the ones that strand people in July.
Both ends of the season are also when parts are available. Booking service in May or September rather than late June is the difference between a next-day consumable and a three-week wait on a board.
Parts, lead times and obsolete boards
Parts availability decides more repair-versus-replace calls than age does.
Consumables stay available for a long time: igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, thermistors and gaskets are stocked or next-day across all five brands we service. Heat exchangers and control boards are the constraint. A discontinued board on a heater more than about twelve years old is frequently unobtainable at any price, and that turns a repairable fault into a replacement regardless of the 40 percent rule.
We check part availability before quoting rather than after. A quote that assumes a board exists, followed by a call saying it does not, wastes a fortnight of a short Guelph season.
